What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the back of the eye to the brain. It usually occurs later in life, but it can happen at any age.
Glaucoma is often associated with higher-than-normal pressure inside the eye, but may also occur when intraocular pressure (IOP) is normal. If left untreated, glaucoma initially causes loss of peripheral vision and can eventually lead to blindness.
Treatment
If you’re diagnosed with glaucoma, don’t panic. With routine check-ups and prompt treatment, vision loss often can be prevented or slowed. Early glaucoma usually has no symptoms, therefore, routine eye exams are critical in the prevention of the disease.
The main treatments for glaucoma are topical medicine (prescription eye drops), laser treatments and/or surgical procedures. Dr. Russo is an expert in identifying and managing glaucoma and will help you understand the treatment that’s right for you.
